i have been slightly irritated by everyone’s lack of perspective regarding 峯岸みなみ (Minegishi Minami)’s scandal. i will try to make this brief.

it is, of course, sad to see her crying on youtube and it is sad to see her future fall into shambles. however, it is no secret that there is a no-dating…

It’s difficult for me to concisely respond to this due to how emotionally charged of a subject this is.

I agree, Minegishi Minami signed a contract and it’s business. It’s not the apology that is the issue, it’s the form in which it was handled as well as a glaring sign to what is wrong with this marketed culture. Considering how closely guarded young stars are under contract, her company could have kept her from shaving her hair (to whether it was her idea or not I will not project onto her), her apology was framed on the youtube page as a form of slut shaming.

Just because it’s acceptable in Japan as well as Korea and many parts of Asia, to which young women are subjected to inhumane contracts, does not make them less responsible or reprehensible for their actions. And to argue seeing from a Western perspective, this is clearly an issue that transcends Asia into our own problematic ideals of young Hollywood.

One also has to bring up the suspicious circumstances in 2009 when Miki Saotome was demoted and eventually quit the band. Though we can’t know for certain the reason, chances are most likely due to the purity clause or simply because other girls in the band didn’t like her. Instead of protecting her from that, they thought in terms of “business” and just weeded her out like any other disposable pop star in their grasp. Keeping in mind public image, Shirahama Alan barely gets mentioned in the media and his company has a similar contract to which the affair is dismissed as being his own private business. How interesting that he’s afforded that luxury.

The problem is not about Western practices trying to smother another country’s way of conducting their territory, the issue is how a young woman, a human being, is being forced to apologize for her own life which she hadn’t wanted exposed in the first place.

The form in how it was handled? They asked her to make an apology. She made the decision to shave her head. It was uploaded as a Youtube video. It being featured makes sense because they want as many people to see this apology as possible so that as many people as possible know that AKB48 does not reprehend this kind of behavior.

I would agree that it is slut-shaming if she were a normal actress or something, but the fact remains that normal non-idol actresses/musicians can pursue relationships and there is no way they would ever be asked to apologize to the public in that case. Again, she signed a contract. Again, this isn’t about her, this is about the company/AKB48’s public image. It is a well-known fact that AKB48 members cannot have boyfriends. They cannot make an exception for just one person. It isn’t so much as slut-shaming, but trying to assure everyone that AKB48 does not permit such behavior as they have previously promised.

Subjected to inhumane contracts? Again, everyone in AKB48 agreed to this. No one forced them to join AKB48. Don’t be ridiculous.

That is the very nature of AKB48. They decide who is featured in things by rock paper scissors for goodness’ sake! There are dozens of girls; the sad reality is everyone is disposable. No one person is extremely popular in the band; they are important as a group and not as individuals. I do not know why anyone is surprised at any of this. Again, they couldn’t just make an exception for Miki Saotome or else they are sending a message to all the other girls that it’s okay to break rules.

Shirahama Alan did not sign a “no-girlfriend” contract.

That young woman knew the rules and broke them. I feel sorry for her, but the situation is a little bit different. Of course she didn’t want this news exposed, but she made the decision to break the rule and eventually she got caught breaking it.

All of your judgment is from a western perspective and you are completely ignoring all Japanese cultural perspective, as well as what signing a contract actually entails.

First off, let me address what is being thrown in each entry:

Yes, I am responding from a Western perspective. A Western perspective of someone with Asian ethnicity who has been forced to address these values in various points of my life to which l have understood but inevitably declined because I did not relate to them or agree with them.
It’s a matter of my own personal ethics that may take parts of my environment but my beliefs are my own regardless of where I’ve grown up or what my ancestry may be. I have just as much validity to respond as anyone else as whether my identity was a white female in Japan like yourself, a Hispanic man from Istanbul or mixed race like myself. It’s influential but not absolute. In the way my argument is relative, so are the people who have reblogged and sympathize with your perspective, but are also of Western heritage.

Frankly, I’m not interested in unpacking my deep-seated issues with cultural privilege anyway. This is an argument based on conservative outdated ideals as opposed to the changing culture of society and its standards of viewing a woman’s propriety.

I also have argued before about the face of the company at hand, I understand the value of image and hurting successes/profit margins. That said, contract or no, it’s an antiquated practice that is being questioned for being wrong in of itself. This affects not just Japan but Korea, the majority of Southeast Asia and in reality, the world itself. These men want overtly sexualized women yet want them to be docile and chaste, having their cake and eating it too.

I bring up Miki Saotome not because she deserves special treatment but that her treatment was far less extreme but extreme regardless. Alan Shirahama not having the same clause a woman in the same field is partially my point, but this is considered the same action with no consequence.

Just because people have very few choices doesn’t mean coercion did not have an impact, there are only raw deals available. It reminds me of where I am currently situated in Chicago, young black kids are told that the only way they have out of their situations is to sign a music deal no matter how terrible the conditions may be. But luckily no pop stars have faced life-or-death problems the way they have in Chicago (unless you count some of the suicides.) Or even the global fashion economy, for a circumstance the same in any continent.

I’m not surprised by the action since time and time again female pop stars are discarded and traded for flimsy reasoning, but the fact it is reaching such a turning point is why people feel so riled up to respond to it.

And signing a contract is not always the final end all and say all, as we have seen in various moments in history. Business is not just business, again these are human beings who are people before they are commodity for public distribution. The inhumanity of the contract illustrates this.

I understand your perspective and don’t expect you to agree with me. I give it serious contemplation, so please don’t dismiss what I say because my argument comes from further proximity than yours.

I’ve said my piece and won’t press further on the matter. To quote a friend’s final message of an email (because I tend to prefer silly punchlines to cut tension),

“Would you shave a kitten and leave it outside in the cold for throwing up on your pillow if it were under contract? I will say though, I wish Taylor Swift would be forced to have her head shaved and taken down a peg or two.”
